3 Ways To Troubleshoot Ecobee 3 Not Cooling Problem

A few months ago, my Ecobee Thermostat ran into a serious problem.

It was the month of May, and the weather outside was so hot and humid that you could easily bake a loaf of bread without an oven. When suddenly, my device started to malfunction.

The colling function was turned on, but the room didn’t seem to cool down even after hours of blaster the AC.

Ecobee was not colling.

So, if you come across a similar problem as I did, here are 3 basic methods you can use to get the device working.

Why is Ecobee not cooling?

There are several reasons why an Ecobee thermostat may not be turning on the heat. Here are some possible causes:

Incorrect wiring

If the thermostat is not properly wired to the HVAC system, it may not be able to control the heat.

This can be caused by loose wires, incorrect wiring, or a damaged wire.

Temperature settings

If the temperature settings on the thermostat are incorrect, it may not turn on cooling.

Power issues

If the thermostat is not receiving power, it will not be able to control the heating system. This can be caused by a tripped breaker, a blown fuse, or a damaged power cord.

Faulty thermostat

If the thermostat is malfunctioning, it may not be able to control the cooler system.

This can be caused by a variety of issues, such as a damaged display screen, a faulty temperature sensor, or a software glitch.

HVAC system issues

If there are problems with the HVAC system itself, the thermostat may not be able to activate the heating system.

For example, if the furnace is malfunctioning, the thermostat may not be able to turn on.

In order to determine the cause of the issue, it’s important to troubleshoot the thermostat and HVAC system. And here are three ways to do so.

1. Check the Settings on Your Thermostat:

First, make sure the thermostat is set to the “Cool” setting.

Check that the temperature is lower than the present temperature in your house and that the system is in “cool” mode.

Check the fan settings to see whether the temperature is appropriately adjusted.

The fan has two settings: “auto” and “on.” If the fan is set to “on,” it will operate even when the cooling system is turned off.

Set the fan to “auto” so that it only operates when the cooling system is turned on.

2. Verify Your System is Properly Connected:

Check that the thermostat is correctly linked to the cooling system if your Ecobee 3 is not cooling your house.

If you just installed the thermostat, double-check that the wire is properly connected to the correct terminals.

Check the breaker box to confirm that your air conditioning system’s circuit breaker has not tripped. If so, reset the breaker to re-energize the cooling system.

3. Check Your Air Conditioning System:

If the settings on your thermostat and the connection to your cooling system are correct, it’s possible that there is an issue with your air conditioning system.

Here are a few things you can check:

Check the air filter.

A dirty air filter can restrict airflow and cause the air conditioning system to work harder to cool your home. Check and replace the air filter if needed.

Check the outdoor unit.

The outdoor unit can become clogged with dirt, leaves, and debris. Clear any debris from around the outdoor unit and ensure that it is free from any obstructions.

Check the refrigerant level.

A low refrigerant level can cause your air conditioning system to blow warm air. Contact a professional to check the refrigerant level and recharge it if needed.

Check the duct

Damaged or leaky ductwork can cause your air conditioning system not to cool your home effectively. Check the ductwork for any leaks or damage, and repair or replace as needed.

Ecobee still not cooling?

If you have tried all of these troubleshooting steps and your Ecobee 3 is still not cooling your home, it may be time to contact a professional HVAC technician.

A professional can diagnose and repair any issues with your cooling system and ensure that it is working efficiently to cool your home.
