I have been a regular user of the Ecobee smart Thermostat for almost 4 years now. And the most common issue that I have faced over the years is – Ecobee Wrong Temperature Problem.

Especially in the summer months, the Ecobee has a habit of showing incorrect temperatures. 

Thus, here are 8 ways you can resolve this issue. 

Why is Ecobee having a temperature problem?

There are several reasons why an Ecobee thermostat may experience temperature problems, including:

Placement 

Suppose the thermostat is placed in a location that is exposed to direct sunlight, drafts, or heat sources such as a fireplace or radiator. 

In that case, it may affect the temperature reading and cause incorrect readings.

Temperature sensor

The temperature sensor may be located in an area that is too hot or too cold, causing it to read the wrong temperature.

HVAC system issues

Issues with the HVAC system, such as a malfunctioning furnace or air conditioner, can cause temperature problems.

Firmware updates 

If the Ecobee thermostat’s firmware is outdated, it may cause temperature problems.

Wiring 

Issues with the wiring of the thermostat can cause temperature problems. Loose or damaged wires can lead to incorrect temperature readings.

Calibration

The temperature reading on the thermostat may need to be calibrated to match the actual temperature of the room.

Software glitches

Software glitches or bugs in the Ecobee thermostat’s programming can cause temperature problems.

1. Check the thermostat placement

The first step in diagnosing the wrong temperature issue is to ensure that the thermostat is placed correctly. 

Make sure that the thermostat is not exposed to direct sunlight, drafts, or heat sources such as a fireplace or radiator. 

If the thermostat is placed in an area that’s too hot or too cold, it can affect the temperature reading.

The general rule of thumb is to place the thermostat on a centralized location so, it can capture the ideal reading of the complete room. 

2. Calibrate the thermostat

Calibrating the thermostat is another way to fix the wrong temperature problem. 

This process involves adjusting the temperature reading to match the actual temperature of the room. 

To calibrate the thermostat, 

• Select “Settings” from the “Main Menu.” 
• Select “Installation Settings” and “Thresholds” next.
•  You can now modify the temperature reading to match a thermometer in the room.

3. Change the location of the temperature sensor

The Ecobee thermostat comes with a temperature sensor that can be placed in different areas of the house.

 If the temperature sensor is placed in an area that’s too hot or too cold, it can affect the temperature reading. Try moving the temperature sensor to a different location to see if it makes a difference.

4. Check the HVAC system

The wrong temperature reading may be caused by issues with the HVAC system, such as a malfunctioning furnace or air conditioner. 

Check the HVAC system to ensure that it’s functioning properly and that the air filter is clean.

5. Update the firmware

Updating the firmware of the Ecobee thermostat can also fix the wrong temperature problem. 

• Check that the thermostat is linked to Wi-Fi. 
• Then go to the “Main Menu” and choose “About.” 
• Select “Software” and check for updates from there.

• Go to the “Main Menu” 
• Select “Settings”. 
• Then, select “Reset”.
