Does Life360 Work On Airplane Mode?

Last month I had to take an urgent business trip that popped up out of nowhere. So, naturally, I had no time to call a babysitter and left the kids a note saying, “I’ll be back tomorrow evening”.

I had just boarded a 10-hour flight, and midway in the journey, it dawned upon me that I should check where the kids were.

That’s when I remembered Life360 might not work in Airplane Mode.

But I didn’t want to arrive at any conclusion without tryout things out first. So, I opened the Life360 app, and yes, there it was. Life360 was unable to connect to any nearby network.

So, today’s article is a homage to those three and a half hours of stress I felt while being disconnected from my family.

What is Airplane Mode?

Aeroplane mode is a function found on the majority of smartphones and tablets. It disables all wireless communication functions on your device, including cellular data, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, when enabled.

This is done to prevent your device from interfering with the airplane’s communication systems, which could lead to problems during the flight.

Does Life360 Work on Airplane Mode?

Life360 does not operate in aeroplane mode.

This is due to the fact that aeroplane mode disables all wireless connection services on your smartphone, including GPS.

Life360 cannot operate correctly when your device is in aeroplane mode since it relies on GPS to monitor your position.

It is crucial to know, however, that even if your smartphone is in aeroplane mode, Life360 may still monitor your whereabouts.

This is due to the fact that many smartphones and tablets include an in-built GPS receiver that can receive GPS signals even while your device is in aeroplane mode. However, this strategy is not always dependable and may not be applicable in all circumstances.

When to Use Life360 in Airplane Mode?

While Life360 does not work in airplane mode, there may be situations where you still want to use the app while on a plane.

For example, if you are travelling with your family and want to keep track of each other’s location, you may still want to use Life360 even when your device is in airplane mode.

In this case, you can enable Wi-Fi on your device and connect to the airplane’s Wi-Fi network. This will allow you to use the app and keep track of your family’s location.

It’s important to note that this method may not work on all airlines, and some airlines may not allow passengers to connect to their Wi-Fi network while in the air.

Additionally, even if you are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network, the app may not be as accurate as it would be when your device is not in airplane mode.

How to use Life360 in Airplane Mode?

Though Life360 cannot be used if you don’t have a stable internet connection, here are a few hacks you can use.

Use Offline Maps

Life360 allows users to download maps of specific areas for offline use.

You can download the map of the area where you will be traveling and use it to see your family members’ locations without an internet connection.

However, keep in mind that the map data will be limited, and you will not be able to see real-time traffic updates or any changes in your family members’ locations.

Share Location via SMS

If you have no internet connection, you can still share your location with family members via SMS.

Here’s how you can do so…

For Android:

  • On your Android device, launch the Life360 app.
  • Tap the circle of the family member whose location you wish to share.
  • At the bottom of the screen, tap the “Share My Location” button.
  • Choose “SMS” as the sharing method.
  • Enter the phone number of the person with whom you wish to share your location.
  • To share your location through SMS, press the “Send” button.

For iOS:

  • On your iOS device, launch the Life360 app.
  • Tap the circle of the family member whose location you wish to share.
  • At the bottom of the screen, tap the “Share My Location” button.
  • Scroll down and click on the “Send as Text Message” button.
  • Enter the phone number of the person with whom you wish to share your location.
  • To share your location through SMS, press the “Send” button.

Use Wi-Fi Hotspots

Although aeroplane mode turns off cellular data, it does not turn off Wi-Fi.

If you are on an aeroplane with in-flight Wi-Fi or at a place with public Wi-Fi, you may connect to it and use Life360 normally.

Although your functionality is limited, you will at least get to know what your family and close friends are up to.
