If not, then this article will explain TV-14 and PG-13 ratings regarding content available to viewers.

You’ll discover the purpose of these ratings and how they can influence your viewing choices. Therefore, if you’re interested in learning what those letters in streaming services mean, keep reading!

What is TV-14?

TV-14 is a rating associated with content for individuals aged 14 and above. Most parents would find the content of these programs inappropriate for children under the age of fourteen.

The FCC advises parents to be cautious when watching this program and to avoid letting children under 14 watch unattended.

The discourse in programs with this classification is highly suggestive, the crude language is powerful, there are heated sexual situations, or there is excessive violence.

From a viewer’s perspective, Tv-14 is the stepping stone to mature content, and thus, parents should exercise caution when letting their wards watch any TV-14 movies or web series as they might sometimes have explicit content they might not want to see. Thus, we advise all parents to go through the ratings or reviews of TV-14 movies before letting their children watch them.

Who is TV-14 best suited for?

Movies and web series rated TV-14 are best for teenagers(14 and above) and can be enjoyed by both post-teens and adults.

What is PG-13?

PG-13, on the other hand, refers to content only appropriate for individuals aged 13 and above.

This rating is a stronger warning to parents that the content may not be suitable for children under 13 years old (pre-teen ages). Stronger language, prolonged acts of aggression or sexual activity, and drug use may be examples of this.

PG-13 usually boasts harsh dialogues, hardcore action sequences, and mildly explicit content. As it falls under the P.G. – “Parental Guidelines”, the regulatory board warns parents to pre-check programs with this rating or assist their wards whilst they watch any similar rated programs.

Who is PG-13 best suited for?

Any movies or web series under the PG-13 category should only be watched by individuals over 13, alongside parents’ supervision.

Due to some explicit content, PG-13 programs should be watched under an adult’s supervision. The strength of explicit content might vary from movie to movie; every PG-13 film comes with a prior warning of parental supervision.

Parental Advisory Ratings for T.V.

Since 1997, experts from the U.S. Department of Education have worked with the major broadcast networks, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and The C.W., to create T.V. Parental Guidelines. These guidelines use a traffic light system to help parents decide what is appropriate for their children to watch.

Television programming has, however, increased in violence and sexualization since the launch of streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. Because of this, parents are under a lot of pressure to make sure they are restricting the things their kids have access to.

Several factors influence these T.V. parenting recommendations:

  • The language used in the content
  • Sexual references (if so, then to what intensity)
  • Level of violence in the movie
  • Overall theme and nature of the content

Here’s a list of all Tv ratings and what they mean(what’s the suitable age count for each rating):

T.V. – Y

Although young children are the intended audience, children of all ages can enjoy this content.

TV-Y7 FV

A movie or television show with the designation TV-Y7 FV is suitable for viewers who are seven years old or older.

TV-G

All of the generic television programs are referred to as T.V. G.

Children are not primarily the target demographic for these shows; instead, all viewers are. Although they lack explicit or mature-themed material, they may contain mild violence and coarse language.

TV-PG

The content of PG-rated films and T.V. shows is unsuitable for young children under the age of seven. Anyone above the age of seven is advised to watch P.G. content with parental consent or supervision.

TV-14

As its name suggests, TV-14 content is deemed inappropriate for viewers under 14. TV-14-rated shows frequently include a few mild sexual scenes combined with some severe violence or filthy language.

TV-MA

TV-MA programming is only suitable for mature audiences (those 18 or older; in some countries, this may also be 21), as it frequently uses coarse language, sexually explicit themes, or violently tragic scenarios.

What’s the critical difference between PG-13 and TV-14?

There are two significant differences when considering both these ratings.

Firstly, PG-13 requires a mandatory parental guidance requirement. Unlike TV-14, which only needs parental permission, a parent must assist or at least keep an eye on their ward when they view PG-13 content.

Secondly, the nature of the content varies. The rough language and action sequences may remain untouched, but fewer new elements are introduced in this rating. Some of them include mild sexual scenes and silent humour, which is not typically seen in a PG-13 movie.

From a psychological perspective, A PG-13 movie is like a gateway into more mature stuff and the TV-14 is the first step toward it.

Both of these ratings are similar but complementary to each other. But, a parent’s supervision is advised under both categories.

What happens when a 13-year-old watches TV-14 content?

It’s not uncommon for a 13-year-old to venture out of their bounds and view Tv-14 content. It happens! It’s Okay!

The only issue is that TV-14 introduces a few complex aspects, like sexual scenes and dark/ silent humour, that a 13-year-old might not always be able to reciprocate. Mental maturity and familiarity with topics are essential to understand a movie or web series. Thus, PG-13 is the best thing for them.

PG-13 is designed so parents can help individuals understand these upcoming complex aspects in a simplified form.
